NZ vs ENG, 4th ODI, Napier: New Zealand, England play out thrilling ODI tie
Feb 20, 2008
New Zealand and England have conjured up a pulsating 680-run stalemate in a one-day cricket international at McLean Park in Napier.
The tie, with both sides scoring 340 runs in their 50 overs, left New Zealand in an unbeatable position as the one-day cricket series heads to Christchurch on Saturday.
After three comprehensive winning margins, the penultimate contest turned into a cliffhanger after New Zealand's attempt at another record run chase - this time 341 - floundered in the dying overs. New Zealand seemed on course to replicate their sensational Chappell-Hadlee Trophy heroics 12 months to the day they beat the world champions Australians in Hamilton. Luke Wright emerged as the hero for England after delivering the last over - his only one of the game.
He conceded just six runs as the pressure mounted and when Jamie How was run out by a direct hit from James Anderson on the penultimate ball after crafting a magnificent 139, Daniel Vettori needed to score two off the last delivery. The captain could only manage a streaky single off his feet. New Zealand were 340 for seven at the close.
After watching helpless as England thrashed 340 for six off an ineffectual bowling attack, New Zealand's under pressure middle order produced a strong collective performance that suggested another captivating run chase was in waiting.
However, the loss of Ross Taylor (48), Scott Styris (20) and Peter Fulton (0) in quick succession quickened the pulses and when Jacob Oram was caught by Kevin Pietersen for six, New Zealand shuddered to 315 for six in the 46th over. James Anderson, who suffered the ignominy of recording England's worst ever bowling figures against New Zealand (one for 86 off 10), emerged as a hero after he ended How's 116-ball resistance with a direct hit. How struck 10 fours and three sixes in his 139, the highest score by a New Zealander in a one-day international against England, while McCullum (58) smacked six fours and a six to lay the foundations for an epic encounter.
Earlier, Ryder was a surprising standout with the ball and found himself sitting on a hattrick after Vettori turned to him in desperation as Phil Mustard and Alastair Cook constructed England's best partnership of the series - 158. The seventh bowling option, Ryder was handed the 27th over and had success with his fifth ball when Mustard, whose top score of 83 (from 74 balls) also represented his maiden ODI half century, slugged to Oram's safe hands at long on. Cook, who crossed, had his leg stump dislodged next ball but England quickly found their feet with Ian Bell (43), Pietersen (50) and Collingwood (54 not out) all scoring at better than a run a ball.
